The Tragic Change Just One Year Has Made in America

In late October 2024, the environment was entirely different. Ahead of the American presidential vote, thoughtful residents could acknowledge the nation's significant faults – its unfairness and inequality – yet they continued to see it as the US. A democracy. A land where constitutional order meant something. A nation led by a honorable and decent leader, despite his elderly years and increasing frailty.

These days, in late October 2025, countless Americans barely recognize the nation we inhabit. People believed to be unauthorized foreigners are collected and shoved into vehicles, occasionally refused legal rights. The East Wing of the White House – is being torn down for an obscene ballroom. The president is harassing his adversaries or alleged foes and insisting the justice department transfer a massive sum of citizen dollars. Uniformed troops are being sent into American cities on false pretexts. The military command, rebranded the War Department, has practically liberated itself of routine media oversight during its expenditure of possibly reaching nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Institutions, legal practices, news companies are buckling due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are regarded as members of the royal family.

“The United States, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the edge into autocracy and fascism,” an American historian, stated in August. “Ultimately, swifter than I believed likely, it transpired in America.”

One awakes with fresh terrors. And it's challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – just how far gone we have become, and how quickly it has happened.

However, it is known that the leader was duly elected. Despite his deeply disturbing initial presidency and even after the cautions that came with the knowledge of the conservative plan – even after the president personally stated openly he planned to rule as a tyrant solely at the start – enough Americans chose him over his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as the present situation is, it's more frightening to understand that we are just nine months into this presidential term. How will another 36 months of this downfall position us? And suppose that period turns into a more extended duration, because there is no one to restrain this president from opting that another term is required, possibly for security concerns?

Certainly, not everything is hopeless. We will have midterm elections in 2026 that may bring a different governmental control, in case Democrats recapture the Senate or House of parliament. There exist government representatives who are attempting to impose some accountability, such as lawmakers who are launching an investigation into the attempted money grab by federal prosecutors.

And a national vote in 2028 could begin us down the road toward restoration precisely as last year’s election placed us on this regrettable path.

There exist numerous residents protesting in public spaces throughout communities, like they performed in the past days in the No Kings rallies.

A former official, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of America is awakening”, just as it did post-McCarthyism in that decade or throughout the sixties activism or throughout the seventies crisis.

In those instances, the unstable nation eventually was righted.

He claims he recognizes the signals of that awakening and notices it unfolding currently. As evidence, he references the recent massive protests, the widespread, cross-party resistance to a personality's dismissal and the largely united refusal by journalists to sign government requirements they report only what is sanctioned.

“The sleeping giant consistently stays inactive till certain corruption grows too toxic, a particular deed so offensive toward public welfare, specific cruelty so noisy, that it is compelled other than to stir.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I appreciate Reich’s experienced view. Possibly he may be validated.

Meanwhile, the major inquiries remain: can America regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its standing internationally and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or must we acknowledge that the historical project succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My pessimistic brain tells me that the second option is correct; that everything could be lost. My optimistic spirit, however, convinces me that we must try, through all methods we can.

For me, working in journalism analysis, that’s about pushing media professionals to live up, more fully, to their mission of overseeing leadership. For different individuals, it could mean working on political races, or planning demonstrations, or discovering methods to defend voting rights.

Under twelve months back, we were in a very different place. In the future? Or three years from now? The fact is, we don’t know. All we can do is try to continue fighting.
