Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress forged from the past of Vecna. The search for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a moment that may just hold the secret to his downfall for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.

Like many elements in volume 2, the full story behind the mine shaft incident originates in the stage play the prequel play.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which transported a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to sell to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is known about his research, the briefcase almost certainly contained vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the container could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The prequel shows that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later as a different person. As a youth, he battles the whispers of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will was possessed by the shadow monster in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to become stronger.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale ahead.
