Study Reveals Over the Vast Majority of Herbal Remedy Titles on Amazon Probably Produced by Artificial Intelligence

A recent investigation has exposed that AI-generated content has penetrated the herbalism book section on the e-commerce giant, with products marketing gingko "memory-boost tinctures", fennel "tummy-soothing syrups", and "citrus-immune gummies".

Alarming Findings from AI-Detection Research

Based on scanning 558 titles made available in Amazon's alternative therapies subcategory from the first three quarters of the current year, researchers concluded that over four-fifths appeared to be authored by artificial intelligence.

"This constitutes a concerning revelation of the sheer scope of unlabelled, unconfirmed, unsupervised, likely automated text that has extensively infiltrated Amazon's ecosystem," stated the study's lead researcher.

Expert Concerns About AI-Generated Health Information

"There's an enormous quantity of herbal research out there currently that's completely worthless," commented a professional herbal practitioner. "AI won't know how to sift through all the dross, all the rubbish, that's totally insignificant. It would misguide consumers."

Case Study: Top-Selling Title Facing Scrutiny

An example of the seemingly AI-written publications, Natural Healing Handbook, presently occupies the top-selling position in the platform's skincare, aromatherapy and herbal remedies categories. The book's opening touts the volume as "a toolkit for personal confidence", advising users to "focus internally" for answers.

Questionable Writer Identity

The author is listed as Luna Filby, whose marketplace listing presents this individual as a "35-year-old natural medicine practitioner from the coastal town of an Australian coastal town" and founder of the enterprise a natural remedies business. Nevertheless, neither the author, the enterprise, or associated entities seem to possess any online presence apart from the Amazon page for the book.

Detecting Automatically Created Text

Research identified multiple indicators that indicate potential automatically created alternative healing content, including:

  • Frequent utilization of the plant symbol
  • Plant-related author names such as Rose, Nature words, and Herbal terms
  • Citations to controversial alternative healers who have promoted unproven treatments for major illnesses

Broader Trend of Unchecked AI Content

These publications represent a larger trend of unchecked automated text available for purchase on the platform. Last year, foraging enthusiasts were cautions to bypass mushroom guides sold on the site, seemingly written by AI systems and containing unreliable advice on how to discern poisonous fungi from consumable ones.

Requests for Regulation and Identification

Business representatives have urged Amazon to commence marking AI-generated text. "Any book that is completely AI-generated must be identified as such and low-quality AI content should be eliminated as an immediate concern."

Reacting, Amazon stated: "We have content guidelines controlling which books can be made available for sale, and we have preventive and responsive methods that assist in identifying content that breaches our standards, regardless of whether automatically produced or not. We commit significant time and resources to guarantee our guidelines are adhered to, and remove titles that do not conform to those requirements."
